Our Mission
Our Mission
- To make our communites aware that not all is right with the criminal justice system and we require everyone in the community to become fully engaged in dialoguing these issues and working towards positive change.
- To make employers aware that corporate responsibility also requires corporations to have an understanding of social justice issues in the communities they serve and therefore, denying jobs to people simply because of arrest records is a travesty of justice, particularly as our system of criminal justice does have flaws and therefore, people who have had arrest records related to non-violent crimes and/or people that committed crimes and have been rehabilitated, deserve a chance to be integrated back into the community.
- To make overseas governments aware that when US citizens (or residents) apply for a work, study, tourist or an internship/volunteer visa to go abroad and they have an `arrest’ record, it is important that an explanation is sought rather than an applicant denied a visa because of the "arrest".
- To make landlords aware that there are flaws in the criminal justice system and therefore, denying people access to housing after an `arrest’ record is unfair and usually affects those who are the most needy in our communities.
- To make prospective immigrants, tourists and international students to America and also those immigrants (green card holders) and visitors (students, workers etc.) already here aware that they are held to a higher degree of accountability when it comes to any infractions with the law and therefore, they must take steps to protect themselves particularly when it comes to understanding the law as they may end up not just being disadvantaged through the criminal justice system but also through immigration court
- To create a network of community volunteers/students that can raise awareness within their local communities about the systemic problems that do exist in the criminal justice system in the hope that there will be debate in our communities with a view to reforming our criminal justice system.
It is our hope that raising awareness about concerns in the criminal justice system will also bring about a requirement for those serving the public (particularly in law enforcement ranging from school security (police) officers, police, immigration enforcement personnel, probation officers and prosecutors)to have mandatory education and training on Ethics.
Our Strategy to Meet Mission Goals
- To generate community awareness of the issues surrounding the criminal justice system through the web site, community and student volunteers, advertising and where possible, exhibits in key areas where there is access to large population groups – such as campuses
- Where possible to advertise and/or send stories and articles to business journals/magazines which will target employers so that they are aware of the issues in the criminal justice system and the reason why `arrest’ records should not be used as a tool not to employ otherwise, eligible employees.
- To write to overseas governments and international agencies, urging them not to deny US citizens and residents a visa for study, work, volunteer or travel just on the basis of an `arrest’ record in the US
- To work towards building a network of volunteers who will undertake the task of distributing materials about the Integrity in Justice project – the view is to make more people aware of the issues and dialogue them so that we can bring about positive change.
- To distribute information flyers to rental and housing communities so that landlords are aware of the issues we raise in relation to the criminal justice system and realize that not everyone arrested is going to be a liability for their rental and housing communities.
- To distribute materials for prominent international magazines including some business journals; so that prospective legal immigrants, international students and workers to the US and those already here are made aware of the problems that they may encounter in the criminal justice system and how these could affect them through immigration court.
- To distribute information and articles about the problems in our criminal justice system to student magazines so that students understand that they are living under zero tolerance conditions.
